How to be a Successful Nurse Practitioner: A Simple Recipe

by | Oct 18, 2021

I often have people who come to me and ask how to be a successful nurse practitioner who offers functional services out of their clinic.

In my BHRT training program, I’ve trained hundreds of practitioners on how to expand their services and increase revenue.

Here are a few things that I suggest to functional medicine practitioners of all backgrounds looking to build a successful practice.

How to be a Successful Nurse Practitioner: 7 Simple Tips to Help You Stay On Track

Here are some simple things you can do to stay on the right track towards becoming a successful nurse practitioner or functional health specialist.

1. Talk About it!

What are you truly interested in, and how does this tie in with your offerings?
Whether you are offering BHRT or another wellness modality, you will find success in your practice if you are genuinely passionate about what you are doing.

Always talk about the bigger purpose of the service as well. For instance, you are not just offering BHRT for menopause. You are offering a full suite of wellness services to help people feel younger and enjoy doing things they love.

If you’re wondering how to be a successful nurse practitioner, simply choose something you’re passionate about, and stick with it! It may not happen overnight, but you will reap the rewards of doing something you’re truly passionate about.

The best thing you can do is show up and share information about why this is something you are passionate about and how it can impact people’s lives.

2. Show the Value of Your Services

People won’t necessarily buy into things unless they can clearly see the value.
We’ve all seen marketing like this on infomercials featuring “before/after” shots, but why not get deeper? Use personal testimonials and hire ambassadors to get the word across to people that what you are doing really helps.

3. Show Your Expertise

Do you specialize in a certain area of wellness and health?
Make sure that your potential customers understand exactly what you do and that you are fully qualified. You do need to be an expert to gain people’s trust, and have these qualifications should be clearly displayed on your wall.

For example:

  • You are an RN and dietician who specializes in weight loss for wellness
  • You are licensed to give anti-aging treatments such as Botox
  • If you have experience in mental health, you can offer counseling out of your clinic

Don’t try to be a jack-of-all-trades, either. If you’re wondering how to be a successful nurse practitioner, the answer is that you should title yourself as something other than a “nurse”!

There’s nothing wrong with that, but you need a title that clarifies what you have to offer that very few others do.

4. Be Smart About Marketing

Building your brand is a big deal. Find reputable help, and don’t skimp on the budget.

5. Offer FREE Information

Blog content, newsletters, pamphlets, social media… using all or any of these strategically offers would-be customers free value, which they can then use to make their own decisions about what they want to purchase, and why.

Whenever I’m helping others learn more about becoming a successful nurse practitioner, I like to always hone in on an important point: you are not selling to people. You are educating people on how to be more empowered with their own health!

People these days are interested in investing in their own health. You can give them the opportunity to learn more about doing so through your services by offering free community workshops to generate leads or specialty health classes as part of your packaging.

6. Use Subscription or Package Pricing Models

When it comes to pricing and packaging your services, it might seem like the sky’s the limit regarding how you choose to market your packages.

But in my experience and other experts I work with, you have the most revenue potential when you use a subscription and/or package pricing model.

This means bundling your services together to offer maximum value and getting buy-in that they will continue to use your services over a specific period of time.

Within this context, consider whether you want to:

  • Charge for the initial consultation
  • Offer a free consultation
  • Get clients signed onto an annual contract with regular payments automatically charged
  • Offer different packages at different tiers
  • Offer different packages with different themes (e.g., anti-aging, restore your energy)

You must consider that people aren’t always compliant and sell them on a package they can afford and are truly willing to commit to.

You may also want to consider advertising a free consultation but have it only be free if they decide to move ahead with the rest. (This model can be successful, but don’t deny the importance of transparency in pricing as well – you don’t want people to walk away feeling like they’ve been duped).

7. Consider Offering Hormonal Health Services

Functional medicine services, especially those targeted to middle-aged demographics, continue to be in high demand.

(Bioidentical) Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT) and Testosterone Replacement Therapy (TRT) are examples of high-demand, effective treatment modalities.

BHRT offers benefits to women in menopause, but it’s widely applicable beyond that. Just a few examples include:

  • A range of women’s health issues
  • Mental health support
  • Male hypogonadism
  • Infertility
  • Anti-aging treatments

With BHRT and other types of hormonal health support, patients get a higher standard of care, starting with comprehensive lab testing and moving all the way through regular monitoring.
